Ma (a Japanese aesthetic concept) is defined as:  The space, interval or timing between two structured parts-for example, as the silence between phrases in music. In architecture, it refers to the use of empty or open spaces as they relate to the idea of how the invisible or intangible plays an integral part in the aesthetic whole.
